Four of Swords symbolism
A knight lies in repose on top of a tomb inside a church, his hands joined in prayer. Three swords hang on the wall above him and one lies beneath him along the tomb. A stained-glass window shows a scene of care and blessing.
The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.
Upright meaning
- rest
- recovery
- retreat
- recharge
The Four of Swords is rest, recovery and retreat. After conflict or stress, the mind needs time to recharge. The card asks you to pause deliberately rather than wait until you collapse.
It favours holidays, sleep, meditation, quiet time and stepping back from arguments. Rest is productive: decisions made after recovery are clearer than those made in exhaustion.
Reversed meaning
- restlessness
- burnout
- returning to activity
Reversed, the Four of Swords shows restlessness, burnout or returning to activity too soon. It can also show resisting rest because you feel you do not deserve it.
Listen to your body and mind. If you have rested, it may be time to return; if not, take the break.

Number, element and astrology
The Four of Swords belongs to the suit of Swords (also called Blades; Spades in playing-card terms), the air suit that deals with thought, truth, communication, conflict and decisions. In tarot numerology, 4 is the number of stability, structure and foundations. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Jupiter in Libra and gave it the title Lord of Rest from Strife.
Four stabilises, and a stabilised mind is a mind at rest. Jupiter in Libra brings a gentle, restorative quality. The Golden Dawn named it Rest from Strife: a pause between battles rather than the end of the war.
Advice from Four of Swords
