Number, element and astrology
The Four of Cups belongs to the suit of Cups (also called Chalices or Hearts in playing-card terms), the water suit that deals with emotions, love, relationships, intuition and creativity. In tarot numerology, 4 is the number of stability, structure and foundations. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Moon in Cancer and gave it the title Lord of Blended Pleasure.
Four stabilises its element, and stabilised emotion can turn stagnant. The Moon in Cancer, strong but inward-looking, gives the card its brooding quality. The Golden Dawn called it Blended Pleasure: comfort mixed with dissatisfaction, having enough yet feeling that something is missing.
