Judgement symbolism

An angel, usually identified as Gabriel, blows a trumpet from the clouds. Below, men, women and children rise from open coffins floating on water, their arms raised toward the sky. Snowy mountains stand in the background. It is the moment of awakening, when a call is heard and people rise to answer it.

The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

Upright meaning

Judgement is the card of awakening, reflection and second chances. It shows a moment of reckoning in which you look back on your choices, learn from them and rise to a new level of understanding.

In a reading, the card often signals an inner calling that can no longer be ignored, a decision that changes your direction or an opportunity to start again with more wisdom. Its number is twenty, which reduces to two, a new cycle of choice.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, Judgement points to self-doubt, harsh self-criticism or ignoring a calling. You may be afraid of being judged by others or stuck replaying past mistakes.

The reversed card asks for self-forgiveness. Learn the lesson and move forward rather than punishing yourself.

Number, element and astrology

Judgement is card 20 (XX) of the Major Arcana, the 22 trump cards that describe life's big lessons and turning points. In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's system, which shaped the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, it is attributed to the Hebrew letter Shin and to Fire (modern: Pluto), giving it the element of fire. In numerology, 20 reduces to 2, linking it with The High Priestess.
